A closer look at the route
The Aït Bouguemez is a broad green valley of barley and wheat fields, apple, apricot and walnut trees, and adobe houses in the purest Berber style — which is why everyone calls it the Happy Valley. It makes a gentle start before the route climbs to the Aït Imi pass (2,905m), where the whole skyline of Tizal, Ouaouguelzate, Azurki, Iguoudamen and M'goun opens up at once.
Then comes the reason for the trip: two full days inside the M'goun gorges, walking in the river itself between overhanging orange walls, with pink oleander along the banks. Expect wet feet all day and one of the most striking landscapes in Morocco. Six hours of walking a day, bivouacs and village houses, and a hot shower waiting at Boutaghrar.
