What to expect
Our camps are pitched away from the road, at the foot of a dune where the sand is firm and the wind drops after dark. There are canvas tents with proper beds and blankets, a mess tent for dinner, a fire, and drums if anyone in the crew feels like it — which they usually do.
Dinner is cooked on site: tagine, bread baked in the embers, salads and tea. Afterwards the fire burns down and the sky takes over. Merzouga and the Drâa are among the darkest places in Morocco, and on a moonless night the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a shadow. Stay one night as part of a Sahara tour, or two to three nights if you want to move camp with a camel caravan.
