What to expect

A camel does about four kilometres an hour, and that turns out to be exactly the right speed for the Sahara. Our camel treks run from Merzouga and from the Drâa valley near Zagora, led by handlers who grew up with these animals and can read the dunes the way our mountain guides read a ridge line.

The short version is a two-hour ride out to a dune crest for sunset and back to camp for dinner. The long version is a two or three day caravan, with the camels carrying the bedding and the kitchen, a bivouac in a different place each night, and bread baked in the sand. Nothing technical is required — you will be shown how to mount, dismount and sit, and the handler leads throughout.
