Essaouira (Mogador) and Its Shores

Essaouira, with a population of 70,000, is renowned for its Gnaoua festival, artists, and fishing industry. This former Portuguese enclave, known as Mogador, has a history dating back to the 7th century BC and has been influenced by various civilizations, including the Romans and Phoenicians. In the 15th century, the Portuguese took control and built the port in 1506. By the 17th century, Essaouira became Moroccan again and a welcoming place for Jewish and European communities. Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah commissioned a new port designed by Frenchman Théodore Cornut, modeled after Saint Malo in France.
